VGP inspection requirements

The VGP (periodic general inspection) is a legal requirement under the French Labour Code. It detects any deterioration that could create a hazard in time and protects the employees who use the equipment.

Who is concerned?

The employer, or the company providing the equipment to its staff, must have the inspections carried out by a competent person and keep the reports in the safety register. The requirement also applies to hired equipment used over a long period.

Which equipment, and how often?

Lifting equipment (cranes, aerial work platforms, forklifts, overhead cranes, hoists, tail lifts) and lifting accessories (slings, chains, hooks, spreader beams). For most mobile lifting equipment (loader cranes, aerial work platforms, forklifts), the VGP inspection is required every six months; for fixed equipment such as overhead cranes, and for lifting accessories, it is generally required once a year. Electrical installations and fire extinguishers are also subject to periodic inspections, generally once a year.

What are the risks without a VGP inspection?

If the labour inspectorate carries out a check, missing inspections can lead to a formal notice, the equipment being taken out of service and penalties. In the event of an accident, the employer is directly liable.
